Wooden toys. Great for the kids and for you!
You can find wood plans to make a huge range of items. But I think that of all those things, one of the most rewarding projects is the making of wooden toys.
Traditional wooden toys like rocking horses and doll's houses seem to have largely been replaced by very different playthings that nearly always seem to involve technology. Our children's spare time is occupied by playing computer games, downloading apps to their iPods or iPads and talking to their friends on Facebook. Wouldn't it be great to get them involved in a stimulating and creative activity like woodworking instead of those things?
Fortunately, wooden toys are enjoying something of a revival at the moment because they are more environmentally friendly and longer lasting than those made of plastic or other artificial materials. They could even become a treasured heirloom that your children could pass on to their children.
You could get older children involved in making toys for their younger brothers and sisters. This could spark an interest in woodworking as they share your enjoyment of the fun their creations are giving.
The number one priority when you are making wooden toys is of course safety. Youngsters do tend to put things in their mouths so you will need to take this into account. Hardwoods are best to use because they last longer and will not splinter and for finishing, natural oils are better than varnish which could be toxic.
As well as being great fun for youngsters, wooden toys can be very educational. I remember learning to count, spell and learn about shapes from wooden blocks during my school days. I was fascinated by the shapes and colours of these magical objects. It might be a little old fashioned but I think that is a lot more fun than learning from a computer which seems to happen a lot these days.
What better place to store your wooden toys than a wooden toy box? There are plenty of wood plans available for these and a wooden toy box will last a lot longer than one made from other materials like plastic. It will of course also be a lot cheaper to make your own and as with all woodworking projects, you will be able to personalise it giving you the great satisfaction that you have created something unique.
So put a smile on your children's (or your grandchildren's!) faces by getting some wood plans to make great long lasting toys.
