I wanted to know what each of this things would cost to repair in this format. Also I wanted to know a little about this clarinet. I payed $20 for it. It is a Normandy (France) 18089. Does this mean it was made in France? Is this a good clarinet?

All pad replacement - $

All cork replacement - $

Cleaning - $

Reeds - $

Reed Clamp - $

Answer:

Most shops will charge you between $70-120 for a keys off repad and playing condition service. Some shops are more expensive than others. That will include new pads and corks where needed, cleaning and oiling, and an adjustment. It won't include any parts needed if there's damage. If it has damage such as broken/missing parts or cracks in the wood then the repair can get rather expensive.

A full overhaul on this instrument will not cost more than the fair market value of the instrument - such is often the case with many used instruments that the cost to repair exceeds the value.

Reeds are about $2.50 depending on where you buy them. A "reed clamp" is called a ligature and they come in ranges of quality from under $10 to over $100. Since you don't indicate you know the difference (advantages of the better ones) then a $10 from your music store will do fine.

About the Normandy. Normandy is the intermediate/advanced student model from Leblanc Paris. They're usually good quality wooden instrument with plated keywork. They're very popular with professional sax players who need a clarinet for doubling because the quality is very near professional level at significantly lower cost than a Buffet R13 or Leblanc Paris model.

Yes, it was made in France. Some of the best woodwind instruments made in the world are from France, specifically Paris, and have been for well over 100 years.

Yes, in good condition, the Leblanc Normandy models are a good clarinet. Suitable for professional work among doublers and college level playing among non-performance majors. Professional principal players and college performance majors will usually want an instrument one step above this one - the Buffet R13, Leblanc Paris, or Selmer Paris models.

Cork Flooring and Its Moisture Resistant Properties

When we think of a flooring solution for our bathroom, basement or kitchen we generally don't think of wood based floors. The most common type of flooring for these rooms is vinyl, ceramic or tiles. Have you ever thought of how much you could improve the décor of these areas if you used wood flooring? Well, guess what, you can and not have to worry about water or moisture damaging. The magic product is called cork flooring, a wood based flooring solution made out of cork.

You might be thinking that it's impossible to have a wood flooring solution that's not affected by moisture. However, cork flooring is made out of the same exact material as a cork stopper, in fact it's the left over's from commercial cork stopper production that is used to make the floor. So, just imagine how well a stopper keeps wine and champagne fresh in a glass bottle and after many years the cork stopper is still has good as it was when it was first produced.

Now I bet you're curious as to why cork is so resistant to water. In fact, it will also resist mold, mildew, allergens and even pests. This is due to a natural substance that occurs in cork. This waxy substance is called suberin, and is present in the bark of the cork oak tree. The cork oak tree's bark is actually cork, and a thin layer is removed to commercial produce cork products. Don't worry the process of removing the bark doesn't harm the tree and will grow back many years later. With this little fact, we should now mention that cork flooring is also a eco-friendly product!

With these simple facts you can safely use cork as a flooring solution in your bathroom and not worry about moisture or leaks affecting the floor. In the kitchen cork will be durable enough against pots and pans being dropped on it and in the same instance are comfortable enough to stand on for long periods of time while cooking. In the basement you won't have to worry about mold, mildew or pests feeding on your new cork floors. However, flooding in your basement may affect the floor and might need to be replaced. So it's not suggested to use cork if you're basement is prone to flooding.
