SO Cable And SOOW Cable And What Makes Them Different
We have been doing this for many years and hardly a day goes by that we are not asked what the difference is between SO cable, SOW cable and SOOW cable. SO cable is an older version of this cable and was basically the original classification for what today is known as service cord. The S stands for service and the O stands for oil resistant Jacket. Over time, as technology advanced the W was added to the original classification and that meant that the outer sheath was also now water resistant. The top voltage rating on any of the above call outs is 600 volts. If you have to have more on your voltage rating you would need to look into a Type W or possibly even a Type G cable. Each of these would be rated up to 2000 volts.
The modern day version is now mostly known as SOOW cable. The newest type now has both an oil resistant outer sheath as well as oil resistant internal conductors. The W still represents a water resistant outer sheath. Note we say water and oil resistant and not water and oil proof. Many people inquire if this cable is recommended for situations where the cable will be under water 24/7. It is not advisable to use the SOOW cable in this situation as this is not what it is designed for. Think transitory power situations like stage lighting or temporary generator use etc. Getting the jacket wet occasionaly is much different than keeping it under water. This also is true of the oil resistant attribute of the cable. It is not advisable to keep this cable submerged in oil or any caustic material for that matter.
SOOW cable is available on the small side from 18 gauge in the smaller sizes up to 2 gauge at the large end. Number of conductors can be anywhere from 2 conductors up to 60 conductors depending on how big the cable in question is.

Frequently Asked Questions...
What USB/Ethernet cable do I need to transfer files between computers?
I do not have a firewire port so my options are either a USB to USB cable or an ethernet cable. I am unsure which ethernet cable i would need or which would be best. I am using Vista and need an easy way to transfer files to another PC without using a wireless network or a USB memory stick ect. Please advise.
Answer:
A crossover cable is the BEST option.
They are really cheap and available at ANY computer shop. Moreover, they offer fast file transfer and everything is preset up so you've nothing to worry about. Just buy one and plug either end into the Ethernet port of each computer. A wizard will pop up or you can always Google it for information on making the computers see each other.
Good luck
