Logic Studio

Getting Started with Recording Music at Home
It's possible to record and mix professional quality music at a home music studio because of the incredible improvements in "prosumer" audio gear. A studio that might have cost tens of thousands of dollars to build twenty years ago can be put together for three thousand dollars these days.
Your first investment if you want to build a home studio should be a high quality computer with plenty of hard drive space and lots of RAM. Luckily high quality computers are getting less expensive. I recently bought a new PC with 8GB of RAM for just over $750.
After you order a quality PC or Mac (and it's certainly possible that the one you already own is plenty good enough to get started) you need some kind of DAW program (DAW is an acronym for "Digital Audio Workstation") that you will be doing all of your mixing and recording with. By the way, if you're a Mac person, I recommend Logic Studio.
What you get after that initial purchase of a computer and a DAW depends on what kind of music you are interested in creating. If your interest lies in making completely electronic music with no recording of vocals or real instruments then there's a good chance you will want to look into programs such as Celemony Melodyne Editor with DNA but most people (even those doing mostly electronic music) will need an audio interface so that they can record instruments and vocals.
If you're one of those that is going to need an audio interface you should be aware that many of them actually come with free DAW software.
To give a simple answer to the question "What is an audio interface?" I'll just say it's how your recorded sound (whether it be from a microphone or a direct input) gets into your computer.. I use the E-MU 1616 and it's highly recommended for people using a PC who do not need a lot of inputs. There's a wide selection of audio interfaces available, it's really too big of a topic to cover in detail in this space. Again the "industry standard" is Pro Tools but that's not necessarily the best way to go.
Another "must have" for most people is a microphone. A mic lets you to record acoustic instruments, vocals, & amps. A good mic will likely be an essential part of your recording studio. The SM7 Dynamic Vocal Microphone is one affordable mic you may want to consider. Michael Jackson's vocals on Thriller were recorded with this dynamic mic.
Another piece of gear that I highly recommend is the MXR Carbon Copy Delay Pedal because it's a really great deal at consider it's low price online.
