Many new and modern devices that have been introduced in the field of music have resulted in the production of new sound, as a result of this music has changed a lot over the years.All these reasons have led to the evolution of music.The MIDI controller has played a pivoted role in this evolution out of all the other devices.If we take a look in the field of music and entertainment, the MIDI controllers are increasingly being used.These devices are capable of generating and transmitting MIDI enabled data to MIDI enabled devices.They are basically an abstraction of the hardware are used to control a performance.This device also has a slider that is attached to a synthesizer.
A keyboard is the most common instrument that is used as a MIDI controller.Apart from the keyboard, there are many other instruments too that are used as controllers, instruments such as synthesizers, samplers, drum machines and electronic drums are capable of producing music in real time and they too can be used to transfer the MIDI data at the time of a live performance.Electronic guitars too can be used as a MIDI controller.The traditional instruments such as the drums and the pianos can be outfitted with sensors and a computer processor, after this is done we can use them as the MIDI devices and produce music.For the modification of sound and other various paramaeters of music performance during real time, there are many modifiers used for this purpose, modifiers such as modulation wheels, pitch bend wheels, sustain pedal, pitch sliders, buttons, knobs, faders etc. are the ones which are used.
MIDI Machine Control (MMC), is a device which is basically recording equipment.They transmit messages in order to aid the synchronization of MIDI enabled devices.The various sizes of piano are the most common MIDI controllers.Drums too are used commonly as MIDI controllers, they are provided with dedicated drum pads for that purpose.The Akai apc40 controller is one such type of MIDI controller that is widely used.It is specifically designed for the performance with the Ableton, it has such a control software, it is developed in partnership with Ableton, this makes it easy to use it with the Ableton software, it has given great results.

Music producing machine?
I'm a beginning hip-hop producer looking for a production machine. i looked at mpc's and other akai models and i decided that the akai brand would probably be the best way to go.

which one would you think is the best? I don't think i'm going to sample too much but i will do it occasionally.
I'd like to have as many instruments as possible in my production machine. (all drums, synth, etc.)

None of these machines are what you want. The MPC 2500 and MPC 500 are samplers/sequencers. They don't come with any on board sounds. You either have to sample your own, or buy disks and load sounds. That's not really the best way to use it. The MPC's are also used to sequence multiple synths.
The XR20 is a small drum machine and isn't going to help you make beats.
If your main focus is having a large amount of sounds, and still have the ability to sample, Get the Roland Phantom or Korg Triton. Roland Phantom has more realistic sounds, with Triton is more "computer" sounds.
