LAN Cable Tester - Need Help!!?
This is my dilemma. I need to get a device that tests RJ45 (and possibly RJ11) to see where the cables are going. For instance there are RJ45 cables (or Ethernet cables) attached to a switch in my building. Everything is not organized and no one knows which rooms these Ethernet cables are headed (which rooms within the building) and which ports on the switch are housing these cables.
What device do I need to test these Ethernet cables to figure out where they are heading? A link to a device or a little explanation is GREATLY appreciated. Thank you so much!

The device that the first responder is talking about is called a Fox and Hound. Now this works better if you can attach the RJ connector directly to the tone generator (the fox). All you need it to pick up a couple of barrel connectors, 1 RJ-45 and 1 RJ-11 and a couple of the connectors that go into these adapters so that you can attach the generator.
Now there are other methods to determine what is where as long as the network switch has the ability to respond to SNMP. You can download SNMP tools, give it the IP address of the switch and it will show you the IP address, MAC Address of everything that is attached and what port it is attached to.
